Sunset Park, BrooklynTesting a single-pipe ambient loop before anyone digs
Jason Masters, President of Gaiergy Corp, tests a single-pipe ambient temperature loop in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. He uses the Gaiergy Pipe Heat Explorer.
This is a demo design. It is not a client project.
Watch the test
The tool checks every heat pump at every 5-minute step for 10 years. It finds the hours that break the loop, then tests a fix.
It fails. One change makes it pass.
Results of the demo run, as shown in the video. Each one has its source under it.
Six steps, one pipe.
- Draw the loop on the map. About 5,105 ft of pipe under the street.Source: tool, loop length on the map. Map: © OpenStreetMap contributors © CARTO [6].
- Put 7 devices on one pipe. 4 buildings with heat pumps, 1 geothermal borefield (underground), 1 river thermal exchange and 1 dry cooler.Source: tool, Sunset Park demo design.
- Look inside the ground. A slice through the pipe, the pipe wall, the soil around it and the street on top.Soil layers: USDA Soil Data Access [1].
- Follow the seasons. Hot pavement warms the ground in summer. In winter the cold street pulls heat out of the pipe. In year 10 the loop gives 29 megawatt-hours (MWh) to the soil in winter and takes 18 MWh back in summer estimate.Source: tool, year 10 of the demo run. Weather: NASA POWER, 2018 [2].
- Find the cold snap. January 6, 10 AM. The tool says FAIL and shows which building, which hour and why.Source: tool verdict. Limit: ClimateMaster TE IOM [4].
- Test the fix. 25% glycol by volume. The same loop passes.Source: tool lever test. Rule: ClimateMaster TE IOM, p. 18, Table 2 [4].
Building heating and cooling loads come from NREL ComStock and ResStock, matched on building type, size, location and the 2018 weather year [3] estimate. NREL is the National Renewable Energy Laboratory.
